Two studies released this week give a more careful picture of menopause and the ageing brain. A Nature Communications study examined structural brain changes across puberty, pregnancy and menopause, using data from 1,095 participants.
Puberty and pregnancy showed widespread cortical gray matter reductions in the analysis. Menopause did not show the same measurable volumetric loss when compared with appropriate control groups. Sophie van ’t Hof, lead author of the study, said: “No one had looked at the changes in the whole brain matter in this menopause transition before.”
A separate study covered by Scientific American and published in JAMA Network Open followed 2,603 older women for up to 18 years with annual cognitive testing. The earlier-menopause finding was reported alongside the Nature Communications brain-structure paper, with earlier menopause linked to faster memory decline and earlier Alzheimer’s disease onset.
The two findings are not the same claim. One concerns structural brain-volume change during the menopause transition. The other concerns age at menopause and later cognitive outcomes. The split matters because it keeps the article away from a simple “menopause damages the brain” reading.
