From August 27, 2026, residents across England, Wales, and Scotland can legally connect mini solar panels directly into standard household electrical sockets using certified systems that meet specific safety standards. The process is simpler than traditional solar installation, but several important technical limits and requirements apply.
The rules are governed by Statutory Instrument 2026/848 and Amendment 4 to the IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671), published by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. The central technical constraint is straightforward: micro-inverters are capped at 800 watts of alternating current (AC) output at the standard 13-amp plug socket. Solar panels feeding those inverters can total up to 2,000 watts of direct current (DC). The inverter incorporates automatic disconnect protection that engages if grid voltage is lost—a safety feature that prevents backfeeding into power lines.
The government estimates that an 800-watt system could supply up to 20% of average household electricity consumption and save approximately £110 annually in electricity costs.
