Marine biologists have documented an unprecedented number of previously unknown species living in Earth’s deepest ocean zones, marking a significant milestone in understanding life in extreme environments and highlighting how much remains unknown about our planet’s marine biodiversity.
In 2026, researchers discovered 1,121 new marine species across various deep ocean expeditions conducted throughout the year. Among these discoveries were 24 new species of amphipods found in the Pacific’s Clarion-Clipperton Zone, including a rare, entirely new superfamily. One expedition off Brazil’s coast discovered more than two dozen additional marine species in the South Atlantic Ocean, including new jellyfish, comb jellies, siphonophores, and tadpole-like creatures known as larvaceans, along with a gossamer worm species and new crustacean types.
Advanced technology has enabled these discoveries. Remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) like SuBastian use high-resolution cameras and robotic arms to document and collect samples from deep sea organisms in real time, allowing scientists to observe creatures in their natural habitats and bring back specimens for detailed scientific study.
The discoveries underscore how little humans know about Earth’s oceans despite their critical importance to planetary life. Deep sea ecosystems represent the largest habitat on Earth by volume, yet remain largely unexplored. However, deep-sea mining threatens these fragile environments, with mining operations slashing animal populations by up to 37 percent and species diversity by 32 percent in test zones.
Understanding deep sea biodiversity has implications extending beyond pure scientific interest. These ecosystems may hold clues to potential medical treatments, industrial applications, and strategies for addressing climate change impacts on oceans. Additionally, as human activity increasingly impacts ocean floors, documenting what exists before disruption occurs becomes increasingly urgent.
