Texas DPS starts issuing redesigned driver’s licenses and ID cards on August 18, 2025. The cards feature a black laser-engraved REAL ID star and tougher anti-fraud features.

Current cardholders don’t need to do anything. Your existing license remains valid until its expiration date.

“The way driver licenses are made can make a big difference in terms of public safety,” said DPS Driver License Division Chief Sheri Gipson. “This new card design will make it even more difficult for criminals to produce counterfeit cards, and it enhances ways we can protect Texans’ identities from being stolen.”

The cards are made of tamper-resistant polycarbonate material that is difficult to reproduce. This supports laser-engraved features including the black star that replaces the previous gold star.

When you get your next card after August 18, you’ll notice the gold star for REAL ID compliance has been replaced with a black, laser-engraved star in the upper-right corner. Personal information appears in a reorganized format that’s clearer and easier to read.

The cards meet American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) standards for identity documents. Beginning May 7, 2025, only REAL ID-compliant cards will be accepted for domestic air travel and entering federal facilities.

Texas residents due for renewal can check their eligibility for online or telephone renewal on the DPS website. If invited, you may also renew by mail. Those requiring in-person visits should book appointments through the official DPS scheduler.

The polycarbonate construction supports laser-engraved security features that enhance protection against tampering and counterfeiting.

While the card design changes, the renewal process stays the same. Eligibility for remote renewal depends on factors like your age, previous renewal method, and license status. Have your current card, audit number, and payment method ready when renewing.

The DPS announcement does not mention changes to standard processing times or fees with the redesign. The new design applies to all newly issued cards after August 18 – including first-time licenses, renewals, and replacements for lost or damaged cards.
