Innovating Air Conditioning: A Sustainable Alternative For Cooler Living

Have you observed the frequent changes in the climate? Well, one crucial reason for climate change is the increasing use of air conditioners. They are found almost everywhere, be it hospitals, theatres, halls, malls, marts, restaurants, hotel rooms, and our houses. Air conditioning has provided us comfort inside our houses but caused detrimental effects on the environment. However, there are certain technologies that work to lower these emissions. One such amazingly engineered technology is that of the Gradient-based in San Francisco. They make window ACs that help shrink emissions in the atmosphere.

Global warming has surged due to which every other person is dealing with respiratory disease. Not just that, imbalance in the ecosystem, melting of glaciers, rise in the level of harmful gases, and many other such adverse effects have become common. Conventional air conditioners have been contributing to the greenhouse gasses globally.

Which refrigerant does your air conditioner use?

To acknowledge this, first, let us understand refrigerants and its effects in simple terms. A functional liquid called refrigerant that helps transfer heat from one place to another is used in air conditioners. Refrigerants are used in preserving medicines, vaccines, food, transportation, housing, and at numerous other places. Constituting a major part of our surroundings, they have become a crucial factor affecting the air we breathe, the food we eat, and in turn our health. There are many refrigerants like R-22, R-1, R-2, R-3, R-104A, etc. Every refrigerant has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) value and an Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) value.

  • GWP is the heat absorbed by the gas as a multiple of heat absorbed by the same mass of CO2.
  • ODP is the measure of damage a chemical can cause to the ozone layer.

The GWP and ODP levels vary depending on their compositional group. These values provide us insights into how damaging that can be.

The Gradient uses R-32 which comparatively has lesser GWP levels and 0 ODP value.. The composition makes it easy to recycle and efficient. The design of the ac is extremely minimal and doesn’t consume much space so your window view is saved. It is slender, easy to install, and gives an extremely simplistic appearance. It actually works as a heat pump and thus, can cool or warm a place depending on the requirements. Gradient gives us comfort inside our houses and doesn’t cause many emissions into the environment.

Many such technologies are introduced which can be used as alternatives to the traditional ACs that put out emissions in huge amounts. We as consumers can also contribute towards a healthier environment by choosing to buy products that are more environmentally friendly. Our choices can help break the vicious cycle of global warming.
