WhatsApp’s Android cutoff has arrived, but the safest test is not a viral phone list. It is the operating-system version. WhatsApp’s Help Center says that from September 8, 2026, only Android version 6 and newer will be supported.

That means users on Android 5.0 or 5.1 are the group at risk. A model name alone can mislead because the same phone may run different software depending on updates, region and user settings.

WhatsApp says it reviews supported operating systems regularly and looks at older devices with fewer users, missing security updates or missing functions needed to run the app. The company also says users are notified in WhatsApp before support ends.

The practical checklist is short: open phone settings, check Android version, back up chats, confirm the phone can receive SMS or calls, and move the account before the old device becomes unusable. WhatsApp says it does not support setting up new accounts on Wi-Fi-only devices.

The Help Center also says WhatsApp works on Android phones that can receive SMS messages or calls, and notes the same Android 6 requirement from September 8, 2026.

The article covered the official Android cutoff, why phone lists can be unreliable, and the version, backup and verification checks users should complete.
