A major salmonella outbreak linked to eggs from August Egg Company has triggered a nationwide recall affecting nine states. Federal health officials report 79 people have fallen ill and 21 have been hospitalized across seven states.

The California-based company recalled approximately 1.7 million dozen eggs on June 6, 2025. Affected products include brown cage-free and organic eggs with plant codes P-6562 or CA-5330 and Julian dates between 32 and 126.

These eggs were sold at major retailers including Walmart, Save Mart, FoodMaxx, Lucky, Smart & Final, Safeway, Raleys, Food 4 Less, and Ralphs in Arizona, California, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Washington, and Wyoming.

The recall covers eggs with sell-by dates ranging from March 4 to June 19, 2025. Multiple brands are affected, including Clover, First Street, Nulaid, O Organics, Marketside, Raleys, Simple Truth, Sun Harvest, and Sunnyside.

“August Egg Company is not selling fresh shell eggs at this time,” the company stated in the FDA alert. “When our processing plant identified this concern, we immediately began diverting all eggs from the plant to an egg-breaking facility, which pasteurizes the eggs and kills any pathogens.”

The CDC advises consumers to check their refrigerators and discard or return any recalled eggs. Anyone who has consumed these eggs should watch for symptoms of Salmonella infection, which typically appear within six hours to six days after exposure.

Common symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. While most people recover without treatment within a week, certain groups face higher risks, including young children, adults over 65, and those with weakened immune systems.

Health officials recommend seeking medical attention for severe symptoms such as high fever over 102°F, persistent diarrhea lasting more than three days, bloody diarrhea, or signs of dehydration.

This outbreak comes amid fluctuating egg prices, which hit nearly $5 per dozen in January before recently falling to around $3.30. The recall serves as a reminder about proper egg handling and cooking, including refrigerating eggs promptly, avoiding cross-contamination, and cooking eggs thoroughly until both yolk and white are firm.

The CDC and FDA investigation remains ongoing to determine if the eggs were distributed elsewhere.
