A Russian businessman close to Vladimir Putin spent hundreds of thousands of dollars bankrolling Donald Trump Jr.’s May wedding in the Bahamas, according to a ProPublica investigation published September 14. The disclosure prompted House Democrats to formally open an investigation into the payments and the relationship between Trump Jr. and the oligarch.

ProPublica’s reporting, based on records and interviews with three people familiar with the event, identified Umar Kremlev as the primary funder of the three-day celebration held on two private islands. The oligarch paid for high-end expenses including the rental of the private islands, helicopters, seaplanes, oceanfront villas, and a five-tier funfetti cake airlifted from Florida. On the final night, Kremlev hosted beachside festivities as Trump Jr. and his bride, Bettina Anderson, celebrated with guests.

The amount Kremlev contributed totaled hundreds of thousands of dollars, though the precise figure was not disclosed. ProPublica noted that Kremlev appears to have met Trump Jr. only recently before the wedding, despite the scale of his financial involvement.

Rep. Robert Garcia, the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, sent formal letters to Trump Jr. and the White House on September 15 demanding records and communications related to the relationship and payments. Garcia’s letter described Kremlev as “a Russian oligarch with close ties to Vladimir Putin” and characterized the wedding funding as potentially raising “serious questions about pay-to-play schemes and foreign intelligence infiltration of the President’s family.”

The investigation focuses on Trump Jr.’s background as part-owner and major investor in multiple companies with Defense Department contracts. Garcia’s letter states that Oversight Democrats are examining ways Trump Jr. has sought to “enrich yourself and your family on the basis of your proximity to President Donald Trump,” and suggests the Kremlev relationship may be “the most serious allegation against you to date.”

Trump Jr.’s wife responded to the reporting by describing the wedding arrangements as a gift. In a statement to CBS News, Anderson said Kremlev hosted two nights of festivities and that the couple was grateful for his generosity. She did not address the congressional demands for information.

Kremlev, whose background includes involvement in Russian boxing, has been previously identified by US officials as having ties to Putin’s inner circle. ProPublica’s investigation found he funded the wedding expenses through payments that left a paper trail in financial records reviewed for the reporting.

Garcia’s letter focuses on concerns about foreign influence and potential conflicts of interest stemming from the arrangement, particularly given Trump Jr.’s financial interests in companies with federal contracts. Garcia’s demands for records on the relationship and payments will likely include details about when and how Trump Jr. and Kremlev met, any agreement terms regarding wedding costs, and whether there were quid-pro-quo expectations.

The Oversight Committee has requested documents and responses from Trump Jr. and the White House.
