Queensland Coroner Links Connor Dean’s Death To Vitamin C Deficiency

Queensland Coroners Court has found that the death of six-year-old Connor Dean was linked to severe vitamin C deficiency, a condition known as scurvy. The non-inquest findings said the child’s death was due to cardiac arrest caused by vitamin C deficiency, with Down syndrome listed as a contributing factor.

The case matters because scurvy is often treated as a disease from the past. In simple terms, it appears when the body does not get enough vitamin C for a long enough period. That lack can affect tissue repair, blood vessels, gums, and overall strength.

The report identified Connor Dean as a child with Trisomy 21, the medical term for Down syndrome, and described severe vitamin C deficiency. The key finding was short and direct: “Cardiac arrest, due to vitamin C deficiency.” That wording is why the case has drawn attention well beyond Queensland.

Healthdirect Australia says scurvy is still seen in Australia today and can happen when vitamin C is missing from the diet for months. It also notes that good sources of vitamin C include oranges, strawberries, kiwi fruit, broccoli, cabbage, capsicum and tomatoes. The wider nutrition issue also ties into Karmactive’s coverage of nutrition and disease burden.
