Boston Thunderstorms Delay Logan Airport Flights—NWS Issues High Rip-Current Alert for Labor Day

Boston experienced multiple rounds of thunderstorms on September 3, with the most active period developing in the afternoon hours. The National Weather Service forecast severe weather potential, but the actual threat varied significantly through the storm system’s passage.

During the early phase, showers and scattered thunderstorms moved through the region without producing widespread severe weather. By afternoon, conditions destabilized along the Route 128 corridor. Forecast guidance indicated potential straight-line wind gusts alongside lightning and heavy rainfall. Lightning activity increased across the region. Brief intense rainfall created ponding on some low-lying areas where drainage systems struggle during heavy downpours.

Boston Logan International Airport initiated ground-delay programs as lightning activity increased within the airfield perimeter and cloud ceilings dropped. Arrivals were temporarily moderated while the storm complex moved through the region.

The good news came quickly. Once the frontal boundary pushed offshore—the cold front that had been fueling the convection—conditions improved dramatically.

The forecast shifted immediately after. Post-storm weather became markedly calmer and more pleasant, especially as the weekend approached. The dramatic weather swing exemplifies late-summer New England patterns, where maritime tropical air masses can be destabilized rapidly by intrusions of cooler, drier air from the north.

One additional hazard gained attention: elevated rip-current risk over the holiday weekend. Even as land-based weather improved, coastal waters remained rough enough to pose elevated hazard for swimmers. The NWS flagged a high rip-current risk along south- and east-facing Massachusetts beaches through the Labor Day weekend.

The story of Boston’s Thursday weather isn’t about disaster—it’s about rapid atmospheric transitions. A region vulnerable to severe weather in late afternoon saw conditions stabilize by evening, creating the kind of dramatic weather shift that characterizes early September in New England.
