BBC Weather forecasts scattered thunderstorms across the UK from Wednesday through Sunday, bringing flash flood risks to regions that have experienced record-breaking drought conditions.
Heavy showers are expected for many areas following a summer of unprecedented heat. Most showers will fall across parts of north-west England, Northern Ireland, and southern Scotland.
The UK currently has 71.3% of England in drought status after recording the driest July since records began in 1836. All of Wales is also in drought.
During drought periods, ground becomes very hard and compacted, which makes it more water repellent and increases run off. Downpours from intense summer thunderstorms can fall faster than water can soak into the ground, leading to sudden flash flooding.
