Today is a general election day in California, and voters who have not yet registered still have a legal path to cast a ballot — as do unregistered voters in Washington state. Oregon is a different case, and the distinction matters for anyone following election coverage across the Pacific Coast region.
California provides what it calls Conditional Voter Registration, authorized by Elections Code Section 2170. Any eligible California resident who missed the standard advance registration deadline may walk into a county elections office or an authorised vote centre today, register in person, and receive a provisional ballot. That ballot is kept separate from regular ballots while county officials verify the registrant’s eligibility. Once verification is complete — typically within a few business days after Election Day — the ballot is counted. Voters using this option must bring a valid California driver’s licence, a state-issued ID card, or the last four digits of their Social Security number, together with proof of current residential address if their ID does not show where they now live.
Washington state allows in-person voter registration through the close of polls on Election Day at designated voting centres operated by county auditor offices. Washington’s process differs from California’s in one respect: when election workers can authenticate a voter’s identity against state databases in real time, they may issue a standard ballot rather than a provisional one. Voters still need to bring a valid photo ID or documents confirming their current address to complete registration at the centre.
Oregon does not allow same-day voter registration. The state’s mail and online registration deadline for this election was October 13, 2026, more than three weeks ago. Any voter whose residential address is in Oregon has no in-person registration option today and will not be able to cast a ballot if not already registered. Oregon law has no provisional ballot mechanism for late registrants.
The Oregon-Washington contrast is worth stating clearly because the Portland metro area spans the state line. A voter who sees coverage of Washington’s Election Day registration and assumes it extends to an Oregon address will be turned away at the voting centre.
In California, vote centres are generally open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time. Washington voting centre hours vary by county; voters should check with their county auditor’s office or website before travelling. Both states require in-person appearance; neither accepts a same-day online-only submission in place of showing up in person.
Anyone uncertain about their registration status in California or Washington should check their state’s Secretary of State website before heading out to vote.
