Weather systems across key travel corridors caused nearly 1,000 flight delays across US airports, with dozens of cancellations, affecting travelers primarily through Atlanta, Boston, and Florida airports. Before you accept a rebooking or a travel voucher, know what federal rules require airlines to offer.

The FAA Air Traffic Control System Command Center issued ground delay programs affecting multiple air corridors. Weather systems spreading across the Southeast and Northeast drove the bulk of disruptions, with Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport among the airports reporting the most delays. Flight tracking platforms including FlightAware are reporting real-time cancellation and delay indices.

Under federal Department of Transportation rules, if an airline cancels a flight or makes a qualifying significant schedule change, passengers who choose not to travel on the rebooked alternative are legally entitled to a full cash refund to their original payment method — not a travel voucher. This applies when you decline the alternative travel offered; accepting a rebooking waives the cash refund option for that disruption.

Before accepting any rebooking, verify in your airline’s app what the delay classification is and whether alternatives offered are acceptable. Check live airport status at the FAA’s official system (nasstatus.faa.gov) or FlightAware before heading to the airport.
