Tropical Storm Dolly Weakens to Remnant Wave as NHC Issues Final Advisory

Tropical Storm Dolly has weakened into a remnant tropical wave as it encountered unfavorable wind patterns. The National Hurricane Center issued its final advisory on August 28, indicating transition from tropical storm classification to remnant tropical wave status. The system’s final forecast projected dissipation by August 30, with Advisory No. 5 designated as the last forecast advisory issued on the system.

The tropical wave system, designated AL042026, formed in the central Atlantic before encountering strong vertical wind shear. Shear occurs when winds at different altitudes blow in different directions or speeds, disrupting the organized circulation that defines a tropical storm. Wind shear of 25 to 35 knots pulled the storm structure apart by separating upper clouds from the warm core beneath.

As Dolly moved westward toward the Caribbean basin, wind shear conditions intensified. The National Hurricane Center’s advisory indicated the system had transitioned from a closed circulation to an open tropical wave, meaning the spinning center that characterized the tropical storm no longer existed as a distinct feature.

Remnant tropical waves can occasionally regenerate into storms if they reach sufficiently warm water and encounter calmer wind patterns. However, current atmospheric analysis indicated that regeneration remained unlikely for Dolly. The system was expected to continue as a dispersed wave pattern rather than reorganize into a concentrated low-pressure system.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November, with peak tropical activity occurring during late summer and fall months. During this period, warm ocean water and atmospheric conditions can support tropical system development, though not every tropical wave becomes operationally significant.

Residents in Atlantic and Caribbean regions monitor tropical activity through National Hurricane Center advisories. The final forecast status on August 28 indicated minimal threat from the system as it transitioned away from organized tropical circulation.
