Wildlife rescuers in Los Angeles are intensifying efforts to locate and safely capture a female coyote living with a significant facial growth in the Studio City neighborhood, seeking donations to fund the animal’s eventual medical treatment. The coyote, known locally as “Wendy” and recorded as “Sunshine” by municipal animal services, has been observed in the area for more than a year with what appears to be a prominent mass protruding from the left side of her face.
Wildlife Care of Southern California, a licensed non-profit rehabilitation organization, has spent the past four weeks deploying humane traps and coordinating with residents to track the animal’s movements. Despite sustained effort, the coyote has not yet been safely captured.
Rescue staff have documented certain observations about the animal’s current condition. “Her activity level and body condition are really good—all positive signs,” according to statements from the organization. The fact that the coyote remains active and maintains healthy weight suggests she is still foraging successfully despite her visible condition. However, rescuers emphasize that active movement does not indicate wellness; wildlife can maintain activity levels while carrying serious underlying medical conditions.
The specific nature of the facial growth cannot be determined without veterinary examination. Possible causes could include maxillofacial growths, chronic abscesses resulting from previous injuries or infections, cysts, or other conditions affecting soft tissue or bone structures. Only radiographic imaging (X-rays), tissue sampling, and blood analysis under general anesthesia can establish a definitive diagnosis and treatment plan.
Once captured, the animal will undergo comprehensive veterinary evaluation. The organization cannot establish a prognosis or treatment timeline until examination is complete, and rescue staff stress that observers should not speculate about potential outcomes or causes based on visual appearance alone.
The organization is requesting public donations specifically to cover equipment, trapping costs, and veterinary expenses. Wildlife Care of Southern California receives no government funding, relying entirely on donations and volunteer support to continue rescue operations.
Residents in Studio City and neighboring areas are urged to report any coyote sightings directly to the wildlife organization rather than attempting to capture or approach the animal themselves. Untrained individuals risk injury and may inadvertently cause stress to an already compromised animal.
For residents living near urban wildlife habitat, experts recommend securing trash receptacles with locking lids, removing fallen fruit from yards, avoiding outdoor pet food, and keeping domestic cats and small dogs indoors during dawn and dusk hours when coyotes are most active. Community cooperation with licensed rehabilitators remains essential to both human safety and animal welfare outcomes.
