2026 Rivian R2:
The $45K Electric SUV That’s Already Been to Alaska

Tested from −45°F Fairbanks tundra to 122°F Death Valley dunes — Rivian’s most affordable electric SUV is nearly ready for the road.

● Final Validation Testing H1 2026 Target Normal, Illinois ~$45,000 Starting 300+ Miles Range

Rivian’s upcoming R2 electric SUV has entered the final stretch before launch. The company’s engineers have put the development fleet through what they describe as “multiple lifetimes” of mileage accumulation — spanning extreme heat testing in Death Valley, California, and cold-weather validation in Fairbanks, Alaska. The result, according to R2 Chief Engineer Max Koff, has been performance that exceeded internal expectations.

With a target starting price of around $45,000 — though Rivian notes “actual pricing may vary” — the five-seat R2 is the company’s push into the higher-volume midsize electric SUV segment. It sits in a fundamentally different price bracket from the R1S, which starts above $80,000.

“Rivian isn’t being designed just for R1. If the goal is to build a company that’s only going to make 15,000 cars a year, it would look very different as a business. R2 does need to be successful to support the rate of capital construction of the business because of how much tech we’re developing and how much infrastructure we’re building.”

— RJ Scaringe, CEO, Rivian · On with Kara Swisher podcast, January 29, 2026

CEO RJ Scaringe has pointed to the Tesla Model Y’s success as evidence of a gap in the market — current compact electric SUVs largely follow the same sleek template, leaving room for something boxier and more trail-capable at a mainstream price.

Market Context

Rivian’s shift from niche to mainstream

Rivian launched the R1T pickup in 2021 and the R1S SUV in 2022 — both in the premium segment with starting prices above $70,000. Deliveries fell 18% in 2025, making the R2 program time-sensitive. The R2 is built on a new midsize platform shared with the upcoming R3 and R3X.

The Normal, Illinois plant has been expanded to support R2 production. The R2 enters a more competitive EV market than Tesla faced with the Model 3 in 2017, with options including the GMC Hummer EV and the BYD Seagull reshaping price expectations.
