Blue Bell Ice Cream has issued a voluntary recall for a limited number of Moo-llennium Crunch Ice Cream half-gallons that were incorrectly packaged in Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough cartons. The recall affects products distributed in 16 states and poses serious health risks for people with tree nut allergies.

The packaging error involves Moo-llennium Crunch ice cream – which contains almonds, walnuts, and pecans – being placed in Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough cartons while retaining a Moo-llennium Crunch lid. Since the carton doesn’t list these nuts as ingredients, people with tree nut allergies could suffer serious or even life-threatening reactions if they consume the product.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to almonds, walnuts, and pecans run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” Blue Bell stated in its announcement on August 22, 2025.

A Blue Bell employee discovered the packaging mistake while restocking products at a retail location. The company reports that so far, no illnesses or adverse reactions have been reported, and no additional cases of incorrect packaging have been found.

Consumers can identify the affected products by looking for half-gallon containers with a Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough carton but a Moo-llennium Crunch lid bearing the code 061027524.

The affected ice cream was distributed to retail outlets across Alabama, Arkansas, Florida Panhandle, Northwest Georgia, Southern Indiana, Southern Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and Southwest Virginia.

The FDA has been notified of the recall. Tree nuts, including almonds, walnuts, and pecans, are among the nine major food allergens recognized by the FDA that can cause severe allergic reactions.

For consumers who purchased the recalled ice cream, Blue Bell advises returning it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Those with questions can contact Blue Bell at 979-836-7977 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CST, or email consumerrelations@bluebell.com.

This recall follows Blue Bell’s history of food safety incidents, including a major listeria outbreak in 2015 that led to all products being recalled. That incident later resulted in criminal penalties announced in 2020, when the company paid $17.25 million in fines after pleading guilty to distributing contaminated products.

The current recall is specifically an allergen labeling issue rather than a contamination problem, which is a critical distinction for consumers. While the product poses no risk to people without tree nut allergies, the undeclared allergens make it potentially dangerous for those with these specific food sensitivities.
