Sunita SomvanshiWalmart has recalled 850,000 Ozark Trail stainless steel water bottles after the lids forcefully ejected and caused serious injuries, including permanent blindness in two customers.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall on July 10, 2025, warning that the 64-ounce insulated bottles pose “serious impact and laceration hazards” when opened after storing certain beverages.
The problem occurs when food, carbonated drinks, or perishable beverages like juice or milk are stored in the bottle over time. These contents can create pressure buildup inside the bottle, causing the black screwcap lid to violently eject when a person tries to open it.
Walmart has received three reports of customers being struck in the face by the forcefully ejected lids. In two of these cases, consumers suffered permanent vision loss after being hit in the eye. A third person also reported facial injuries.
The recalled products are silver stainless steel bottles with black one-piece screwcap lids, measuring 4.41 x 4.41 x 11.5 inches with an Ozark Trail logo on the side. The model number 83-662 appears on the product packaging but not on the bottle itself.

These water bottles have been sold exclusively at Walmart stores nationwide and on Walmart.com since 2017 for about $15 each. They were manufactured in China and imported by Olympia Tools International Inc. of Covina, California.
Safety officials are urging consumers to immediately stop using these bottles. Anyone who owns a recalled bottle can return it to any Walmart store for a full refund. The CPSC emphasized the importance of proper bottle usage in their recall notice. Insulated water bottles are generally not designed to store carbonated or perishable beverages that can create internal pressure.
This recall highlights potential dangers in everyday products and the importance of following manufacturer guidelines for proper use. It also raises questions about product testing standards for insulated drinkware, particularly regarding pressure management and lid security.
