The FDA announced a critical food safety recall on January 28, 2025, as La Fiesta Food Products pulls over 32,000 packages of bread crumbs containing undeclared sesame. The California-based company’s unseasoned bread crumbs have been sold since April 10, 2024, while the seasoned variety has been distributed since August 29, 2024, presenting health risks to sesame-allergic consumers.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to sesame run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” states the FDA’s announcement. According to the Food Allergy Institute, reactions can quickly escalate from mild symptoms like hives to life-threatening anaphylaxis.

The recall encompasses two products:

  1. Unseasoned Pan Rayado (26,400 units): UPC #032327000886, lot codes 26032, 26073, 26082, 26092, 26094
  2. Seasoned Pan Rayado Sazonado (6,240 units): UPC #032327000887, lot codes 26094, 26123

The labeling error is twofold – missing both English and Spanish allergen declarations, a crucial oversight given the brand’s bilingual consumer base. This violates FDA’s 2023 sesame labeling requirement that protects consumer safety.

Though no illnesses are reported yet, the recall’s scope suggests thousands of households may have these products in their kitchens. Affected packages are 8-ounce clear plastic bags with lot codes visible on the front.
