Water treatment facilities across multiple U.S. states have reported cyberattacks targeting their operational technology systems. Reports from federal agencies and investigative journalism indicate cyberattacks affected water systems across at least seven to twelve states. U.S. officials including the FBI, EPA, and CISA have investigated the cyberattacks and are examining possible involvement in the attacks. Federal agencies have stepped up information sharing with water utilities about known vulnerabilities and defensive measures.

Affected water utilities have isolated compromised systems, conducted forensic investigations, and upgraded security protocols. Water providers have also increased monitoring of their systems for suspicious activity.

Federal agencies are coordinating with utilities to share threat intelligence and best practices. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has issued alerts and technical guidance to help water systems detect and respond to attacks.

For most consumers, water supply has remained safe and uninterrupted. Water treatment processes include multiple safeguards designed to prevent contamination. However, authorities recommend that consumers stay informed through local water utility announcements about any actual service disruptions.
