South African police respond to the mass shooting that killed 27 in two townships near Johannesburg.

South Africa was rocked by two mass shootings within hours on Saturday night and early Sunday. Eight gunmen armed with AK-47 rifles stormed a bar in Wedela township near Johannesburg and killed 17 people. Hours later, gunmen opened fire at an entertainment venue in Lwandle near Cape Town, killing 10 more. A third attack on Tuesday killed 11 more, bringing the five-day toll to 38.

The first shooting happened at about 9:30pm local time on Saturday in Wedela, a township about 80km west of Johannesburg. Police said eight gunmen entered a tavern, searched patrons, took their cellphones, and opened fire with AK-47 rifles and pistols. Thirteen men and four women died at the scene, and 15 others were wounded. Two vehicles were set alight.

Around 1:46am Sunday, gunmen attacked a venue in Lwandle, a township near Cape Town. Ten people were killed and 11 wounded. Police said they were searching for multiple suspects. A business rivalry may be the motive in the Lwandle case, police said.

What This Means for Residents

If you live in or near Johannesburg or Cape Town townships, armed attacks at entertainment venues are now a leading cause of violent death. South Africa records roughly 60 murders a day, among the highest rates globally. Avoid large gatherings after dark, note escape routes at venues, and report suspicious vehicles to police immediately.

The Investigation

Police said the Wedela shooting could be retaliation for an earlier attack at the same tavern about a month ago. One line of inquiry points to a turf war between illegal gold miners, known as zama-zamas, who control the illicit gold-mining trade in the area with military-grade weapons.

South African Police Service spokesperson Brig. Athlenda Mathe confirmed police had images of the suspects and were working to track them down. No arrests have been made in either case. A multi-disciplinary team led by serious and violent crime detectives is tracking the suspects across Gauteng and Western Cape provinces.

Unique Detail

The Wedela shooting may be retaliation for a prior attack at the exact same tavern roughly one month earlier, police said. This pattern of repeated attacks at the same venue suggests the perpetrators are targeting a specific location, not committing random violence — a detail most outlets have not highlighted.

Bottom Line

South African police have launched separate manhunts in Gauteng and Western Cape provinces. The investigations continue.
