Amprius Technologies has heralded a new era for electric aviation and electric vehicles (EVs) with its revolutionary ultra-high-power lithium-ion battery. This groundbreaking cell showcases a remarkable 10C discharge rate combined with a 400 Wh/kg energy density, offering substantial promise for the future of electric mobility. The battery is poised to significantly influence the electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (eVTOL) and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) industries. Meeting the stringent energy and power demands of all flight phases, it could extend flight ranges by up to 50% and notably enhance payload capacities. Amprius’ advanced material system expertise powers this innovation, which exceeds the performance of traditional graphite cells by about 200%.

According to Dr. Kang Sun, Amprius’ CEO, “The power and energy demands of electric mobility play a pivotal role in shaping commercial opportunities. This new cell is primed to widen those horizons considerably.” This innovative cell also boasts a high power density—3500 W/kg under standard conditions, reaching up to 4400 W/kg at lower depths of discharge. Its design is robust, capable of supporting high current pulses even at depleted charge levels without breaching the lower voltage threshold. Even at a 30% depth of discharge, the cell’s power density stands at a significant 3000 W/kg.

Another standout feature is its ultra-fast charging (UFC) capability, which can achieve an 80% charge in a mere six minutes. Coupled with its reduced weight and volume due to the high energy and power densities, the battery promises enhanced EV ranges and fewer charging intervals. This reduction could lead to decreased operating costs, marking a potential shift in the electric vehicle economic landscape.
