A dangerous fungus is spreading through hospitals across America, and most people have never heard of it. Over 3,000 cases of Candida auris have been reported in 23 states so far in 2026. What makes this fungus different from common infections is that it resists standard antifungal medications doctors typically use.
Think of Candida auris like a lock that evolved to resist the keys doctors typically use. The fungus doesn’t respond to standard antifungal medications. Some strains show resistance to most standard treatments. This resistance is why the CDC labeled it an “urgent antimicrobial resistance threat.”
The fungus lives primarily in hospitals. It spreads through contaminated medical equipment, bedrails, and other surfaces where it can survive for weeks. It enters the body through catheters, breathing tubes, feeding tubes, and other invasive medical devices. Healthy people’s immune systems can usually fight it off, but hospitalized patients are vulnerable. About 30 to 60 percent of infected people die, though many had other serious illnesses.
Where is this spreading fastest? Texas leads with 706 cases as of mid-July. Michigan follows with 503 cases, and Illinois has 366. Other states reporting significant numbers include Ohio, Virginia, and Arizona. The trend is moving upward, and experts warn that Georgia and Florida are seeing rapid increases.
The fungus affects older populations most. About 88 percent of clinical cases occur in people over 45 years old. Those in hospitals, nursing homes, or on ventilators face the highest risk.
Why is identification so hard? Candida auris can look like other fungal infections under older testing methods. Hospitals need modern laboratory equipment to identify it correctly. A misdiagnosis means wrong treatment and continued spread.
The threat became real when the CDC reported the first U.S. cases in 2016, covering seven infections identified between May 2013 and August 2016. Since then, cases have risen every year. In 2023, the CDC counted 4,514 infections in 38 states. The 2026 numbers show the crisis continuing.
