# Joby’s Autonomous Plane Just Flew Across the US With No Pilot Inputs — Here’s What That Actually Means

A plane just crossed the United States without anyone touching the controls. If you’ve wondered how close pilotless flight really is, this is the clearest signal yet. It’s closer than many think, though not quite in the way headlines suggest.

Joby Aviation says an aircraft equipped with its autonomy technology completed a fully autonomous flight across the US. It covered 3,199 miles, from Concord, California to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The company reported zero control inputs from the onboard safety pilot during taxiing, takeoff, cruise and landing. The aircraft was a converted Cessna Caravan, referred to by Joby as the J208. Portions of the flight were remotely supervised from Joby’s California headquarters and from Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina, at distances up to 2,323 miles away.

This wasn’t a passenger flight. It was a proof-of-concept using a cargo-style Cessna Caravan with a human safety pilot on board who never touched the controls. For anyone hoping to book a pilotless flight soon, that remains years away, pending FAA certification of autonomous passenger aircraft. For investors, the demonstration reinforces Joby’s push beyond air taxis into autonomy-as-a-service for military, freight and medical transport, an area the company has been emphasizing to shareholders.

The flight wasn’t one continuous hop, either. The transcontinental leg ran from September 8 to September 16, part of a longer autonomy demonstration tour Joby has been running. It included stops in Phoenix, Fort Worth and Shaw Air Force Base before reaching North Carolina. Joby said the aircraft also had to autonomously reroute around severe weather and thunderstorms in real time during the trip, without prior familiarity with the airports involved.

What is Joby’s autonomous flight? Joby Aviation says a converted Cessna Caravan flew 3,199 miles from California to North Carolina between September 8 and 16, 2026, using its autonomy system for taxiing, takeoff, navigation and landing. It reported zero control inputs from the onboard safety pilot, which Joby describes as the first such transcontinental demonstration in the US.

Joby has not said when autonomous cargo or passenger flights might become commercially available. The “first-ever” description comes from the company itself; no independent aviation regulator has issued a separate confirmation of that claim, though multiple aviation trade outlets have reported the milestone without disputing it. The next marker to watch is any move toward FAA certification for autonomous flight operations.
