BYD electric trucks Europe: ETT 44 claims 600 km range and 20-minute charging

BYD presented what it described as its most comprehensive European commercial-vehicle portfolio at IAA Transportation 2026, with a truck range spanning from 3.5 tonnes all the way up to 44 tonnes. The headline product — the ETT 44 electric tractor — claims 600 kilometres of range and a charge from 20% to 80% in 20 minutes.

Those are BYD’s own figures from its IAA announcement. They are manufacturer claims and have not been independently tested.

According to BYD’s official product documentation for IAA Transportation 2026, the ETT 44 electric tractor is rated at up to 1,000 horsepower, runs on a 651 kWh Blade Battery, and claims a maximum range of 600 kilometres. The company says its 1.5 MW charging system can take the battery from 20% to 80% charge in 20 minutes. BYD’s full European commercial range covers vehicles from 3.5 tonnes to 44 tonnes — spanning light commercial vehicles through to heavy-duty long-haul freight.

The IAA presentation included BYD’s new 44-tonne ETT 44 electric tractor, its largest commercial vehicle for the European market. For European fleet operators and logistics businesses, the commercial usefulness of that specification will depend on the availability of compatible megawatt charging infrastructure along European freight routes. Europe’s megawatt-level charging network for heavy commercial vehicles is at an early stage of development, meaning the ETT 44’s range and charge-time claims may not be fully deliverable on every route until that infrastructure matures.

What BYD's European push means for fleet operators and the market

EU rules set mandatory CO₂-reduction targets for new heavy-duty vehicles, with significant reductions required from 2030 and stricter requirements from 2040. BYD’s timing at IAA 2026 positions it to compete for orders from fleet operators who need a credible electrification plan within the next two to three years.

BYD supplies electric buses in various European markets and has an established presence in the light commercial vehicle segment. The ETT 44 represents its entry into the 44-tonne class, where established European manufacturers are also developing electric alternatives. If BYD’s range and charging claims hold under European road conditions, the product would be competitive on the two factors fleet operators consistently cite as barriers to electric heavy-truck adoption: range and charging turnaround time.

For UK, Australian, and US fleet operators monitoring the European commercial vehicle market, BYD’s IAA announcement matters as a signal of how quickly Chinese EV manufacturers are moving up the commercial vehicle segment.
