Severe weather hit southeast Michigan on September 3, making residents scramble for safety. But here’s what actually happened, according to the National Weather Service.

Very early Thursday morning, around 12:32 a.m., Wayne County was under a severe thunderstorm warning with radar-indicated severe weather including potential 60 mph wind gusts and penny-sized hail. That warning expired around 1 a.m. as the storms weakened and moved out of the area. Flood warnings stayed in effect for parts of northern Wayne County, where heavy rain posed a risk of flash flooding.

That afternoon, the weather service issued a tornado warning for Wayne County, specifically mentioning that thunderstorms were capable of producing multiple tornadoes. The Wayne County warning was valid from approximately 3:47 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. EDT. Similar warnings went out for nearby Oakland, Washtenaw, Livingston, and Saginaw counties. The radar signatures showed tight rotation, the kind meteorologists key on when assessing tornado risk.

Here’s the critical detail everyone misses: a warning doesn’t mean a tornado actually occurred. Warnings mean conditions are present. Radar shows rotation. The atmosphere has the ingredients. But without a confirmed touchdown and damage survey, you can’t say a tornado definitely struck.

That distinction matters for public trust. When people see “tornado warning” and then hear “nothing happened,” they sometimes think the weather service was wrong. Actually, the system worked. The warning got people to shelter. Tornado warnings are predictions of what might happen based on real-time atmospheric data—not guarantees of what will.

The storms themselves produced genuine hazards. Precipitation rates in some cells reached 1.5 to 2 inches per hour. That level of rainfall places stress on urban drainage systems, especially combined sewer networks that handle both rainwater and sewage simultaneously.

Radar-indicated wind gusts of 60 mph were flagged in the early morning warning. That’s strong enough to snap branches, damage roofs, and knock down power lines.

The real story isn’t whether a tornado touched down—it’s that meteorologists spotted dangerous conditions forming, issued warnings that got people to safety, and the system performed as designed. Some storms threatened. Some caused flooding. Some never quite materialized into the worst-case scenario. That’s how severe weather works in the real world, and it’s why warning systems exist.
