If your AI tools stopped working on September 3, 2026, you weren’t imagining it — and you weren’t alone.
ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and xAI’s Grok all experienced service disruptions during the same period.
What OpenAI officially confirmed is that ChatGPT and Codex — its code-generation tool — experienced elevated error rates. The company said it applied mitigation measures and was monitoring recovery. There was also an earlier, separate incident that same day involving ChatGPT’s Work Mode feature, which OpenAI subsequently marked as fully resolved.
Claude and Grok also experienced disruptions, according to separate service-status information and reporting. Those outages were independently confirmed.
What isn’t confirmed is why it happened across multiple platforms at once. The causes of the simultaneous disruptions had not been publicly established. There was no official confirmation that a Microsoft Azure failure caused the incidents. Hyperscale cloud computing infrastructure incidents can affect multiple providers through shared backbone systems, though no such common infrastructure failure was confirmed in this case.
What matters practically is that OpenAI’s status page is the primary source for confirmed incident information about OpenAI’s services. Anthropic similarly maintains its own status page for Claude service updates.
