The United States and China are racing to develop satellites capable of hunting other satellites. That sentence sounds dramatic, and the reality behind it is serious — but it’s also more nuanced than the “space war” framing that often surrounds it.
Here’s what’s actually happening.
In June 2026, a Chinese unmanned spaceplane released a small satellite into orbit. That satellite then maneuvered close to another Chinese satellite, circled it, and then returned toward the spaceplane. The exact purpose of the mission was not disclosed. China has not explained what the satellite was doing.
This kind of operation is called a rendezvous and proximity operation, or RPO. Think of it as one spacecraft navigating to park itself right next to another. That capability sounds technical, but the reason it matters is straightforward: a satellite that can maneuver close to another spacecraft can potentially surveil it, interfere with it, or — in an extreme scenario — disable or destroy it. The difference between what’s known and what’s feared is worth stating clearly. What is confirmed is that China operated a maneuverable satellite that performed proximity operations around another satellite. What is not confirmed is that China intends to use this capability offensively. Nations develop military technology routinely without deploying it in conflict. The US Space Force’s documents describe capability development — not proof of hostile intent.
That distinction matters. The technology being developed is genuinely concerning. But describing the current situation as an actual space war would be inaccurate. The more precise description is an intensifying military competition, with both sides developing advanced counterspace capabilities.
