President Trump has paused a planned 50% tariff on Canadian goods for three days, just before it was set to take effect. Trump said a deal had been reached with Canada. The Globe and Mail described the agreement as a “tentative trade deal,” meaning it is not fully locked in yet.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said “substantial progress” had been made in talks with Trump, but added that important work still remains before a deal is complete. The pause came after last-minute negotiations between the US and Canada that stopped the tariffs from kicking in as scheduled.

Alcohol and autos remain among the biggest sticking points still being worked out between the two countries, according to reporting from CBC and the Washington Post.

Alongside the tariff pause, Trump also raised the idea of reviving the Keystone XL pipeline project. This is a proposal he floated, not a confirmed decision to restart the project.

Trump said he expects a full deal to be finalized within 48 to 72 hours. As of now, no final agreement has been signed.

The news moved Canada’s currency and stock markets, though the exact scale of the reaction has not been detailed. Reactions from Canadian provinces are expected as more details of the talks come out. Recent polling shows many Canadians are wary of their government making concessions in trade negotiations with the US, though exact poll figures were not available for this report.

CBC, the Globe and Mail, the Washington Post, the New York Times, Bloomberg, and Canada’s Prime Minister’s Office have all covered different parts of this story.
