Construction workers expected an ordinary Tuesday. Instead, they found a fortune.
This week, in Sint-Gillis-Dendermonde in Belgium’s East Flanders region, a drilling crew laid bare a life-changing mystery—hundreds of gold coins and tens of gold bars buried beneath a former brewery property. The haul is worth €9 million. Police immediately moved the treasure to a secure location and warned the public away from the site.
The discovery began when 18-year-old Kobe and his team started drilling to lay sewage pipes in the building’s cellar. Kobe’s first thought? “Those look like €1 coins,” he recalls. The reality was far different. Site manager Mario grasped the stakes immediately. “€9 million,” he said. “You simply can’t keep that hidden.”
The gold now sits in police custody while prosecutors investigate. They want to know whether the treasure is tied to Nazi looting, World War II theft, or organized crime. If investigators clear the gold of criminal links and no rightful owner claims it within five years, Belgian law offers a solution: the finder and property owner split the haul.
The property belongs to CAW Oost-Vlaanderen, a social welfare organization serving Dendermonde’s 47,000 residents. CAW director Geert Hillaert expressed both “surprise and amazement” and hoped it might support the organization’s charity work.
In 2009, the Staffordshire Hoard in England surfaced—3,500 Anglo-Saxon metal artifacts worth £3.3 million. Each find raised the same fundamental question: who owns what was buried and forgotten.
The five-year claim period has begun. If someone steps forward with proof of ownership—perhaps a family record, a wartime theft report, or a lost inventory—they can reclaim the gold. If no one does, and prosecutors confirm no criminal link, the finder and CAW will share the €9 million prize.
For now, Kobe and Mario await answers. A routine construction job became a story that will define their lives. The treasure lies secure, and the law waits to decide its fate.
