Ukrop’s has announced a voluntary recall affecting multiple frozen meal products due to potential metal contamination. Aluminum slivers were discovered in the products, traced to defective aluminum baking pans used in the production process.

Food safety officials and the company issued this recall through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), not the FDA. Because these products contain meat and poultry, the USDA FSIS has jurisdiction over the recall.

The recall affected specific Ukrop’s frozen meal products including Baked Spaghetti, Chicken Cobbler, and Bread Pudding sold in Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia, and Kentucky through retailers including Kroger, Publix, Wegmans, and Food Lion. Distribution was limited to these specific states and retailers, not nationwide.

Consumers who purchased affected products are urged to stop consuming them immediately and check their homes for the affected batches.

The products may contain aluminum slivers from defective aluminum baking pans. Even consuming a meal containing aluminum fragments could result in dental damage, mouth injury, or more serious internal injury if fragments are swallowed.

The contamination source was identified through production investigation. Defective aluminum baking pans used in the manufacturing process were the source of the slivers. Ukrop’s is conducting a complete review of its production facilities to remove and replace the defective equipment.

The company is working with food safety authorities to implement corrective actions and prevent future incidents.

Consumers who purchased affected products should not consume them and should dispose of the products safely. Customers may also contact Ukrop’s for information about refunds or replacement products.

Consumers who believe they may have consumed contaminated product and experienced injury should contact local poison control or seek medical attention. Medical professionals should be informed that the potential injury source was aluminum contamination in food.

Ukrop’s has initiated recall procedures, removing affected products from the identified retail locations. The company has also reviewed and corrected its production equipment across its facilities to prevent similar incidents.

The recall demonstrates Ukrop’s commitment to food safety and willingness to take swift action when potential safety issues are identified, even if it means significant costs from removing products from distribution.

The USDA FSIS is monitoring the recall and coordinating with Ukrop’s to ensure the company takes appropriate corrective actions. Regulatory agencies maintain authority to order additional recalls or other enforcement actions if warranted.

Food safety remains a priority for regulatory agencies and companies alike, with recalls serving as an important tool for protecting consumer health.
