Mazda has issued a recall for more than 100,000 of its mild hybrid SUVs due to a potentially dangerous fuel gauge problem. The recall affects 104,854 vehicles in the United States, including 2024-2025 Mazda CX-90 and 2025 CX-70 models with mild hybrid engines.

The issue stems from an inaccurate fuel gauge in the instrument cluster that might show fuel remaining even when the tank is empty. This could cause drivers to unexpectedly run out of gas while driving, leading to engine stalling and increasing the risk of a crash

According to Mazda, the problem occurs when fuel containing ethanol reacts with materials on the sending unit circuit board in the sub-tank. This reaction creates a buildup that interferes with the gauge’s ability to accurately display fuel levels.

“If the vehicle incorrectly indicates an inaccurate fuel level, there is a risk of running out of fuel while driving. This would result in an engine stall, and the vehicle cannot be restarted, increasing the risk of a crash,” Mazda stated in its safety notice.

The recall specifically affects 16,056 CX-70 vehicles (model year 2025) built between December 5, 2023, and April 24, 2025, and 88,798 CX-90 vehicles (model years 2024-2025) produced between December 27, 2022, and April 25, 2025. It’s important to note that plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are not affected by this recall – only the mild hybrid models have the issue.
