Aldi has issued an urgent recall for its Inspired Cuisine Baby Potatoes with Herbs and Butter after discovering the product contains milk not listed on the packaging. The recall, announced on June 24, 2025, affects all 385g packs with use-by dates up to and including July 1, 2025.

This oversight poses a serious health risk to shoppers with milk allergies or intolerances, who might consume the product unaware of its dairy content. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued an official alert, warning customers not to eat the potatoes if they have a milk allergy.

“This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents,” the FSA stated in their alert.

Customers who have purchased the affected product are advised to return it to any Aldi store for a full refund, with no receipt required. The supermarket has placed point-of-sale notices in all stores to inform shoppers about the recall.

In a statement, Aldi said: “Our supplier is recalling Inspired Cuisine Baby Potatoes with Herbs and Butter because it contains the allergen milk which is not listed on the packaging. We apologise that this product did not meet our normal high standards and thank you for your co-operation.”

This marks the second recall for this same product in recent months. The FSA previously issued an alert on April 9, 2025, for the same potato product due to undeclared milk, affecting items with an April 12, 2025 use-by date. The recurring issue raises questions about quality control measures in place for this specific product line.

Milk allergy symptoms can range from mild to severe. According to Allergy UK, mild symptoms include an itchy mouth or throat, swelling of the lips or face, skin rashes, digestive problems, and respiratory symptoms like a runny nose. Severe reactions can lead to anaphylaxis – a potentially life-threatening condition causing difficulty breathing, dizziness, and even loss of consciousness.

UK regulations require food manufacturers to clearly label 14 common allergens, including milk. These requirements aim to protect the estimated one in 50 UK infants affected by cow’s milk allergy, as well as older children and adults with milk allergies or intolerances.

The case highlights the critical importance of accurate food labeling. In 2021, 20-year-old Jess North died from an anaphylactic reaction after consuming only “a couple of mouthfuls” of a ready meal containing undeclared peanuts, underscoring the potentially fatal consequences of allergen mislabeling.

Consumers with questions about the recall can contact Aldi’s customer service at 0800 042 0800 or visit their website at help.aldi.co.uk/s for more information.

The FSA continues to monitor food safety across the UK and issues recalls when products pose potential health risks. This Aldi recall is part of a broader pattern of recent allergen-related alerts affecting major UK retailers, including Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, and Waitrose.
