Meijer has recalled Frederik’s brand Dark Chocolate Almonds because they may contain cashews not listed on the label. This poses serious health risks for people with cashew allergies.
The recall affects products sold in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, and Wisconsin. Customers should check for two specific items:
- 12-ounce stand-up pouches with sell-by dates of May 7, 2026, or May 28, 2026 (UPC: 7-08820-68730-1)
- 8-count 1.5-ounce multi-pack boxes with sell-by date of May 5, 2026 (UPC: 7-19283-11923-0)

No illnesses have been reported so far, but the risk remains serious. People with cashew allergies can experience severe reactions that can be life-threatening.
“Customers with allergies or sensitivities to cashews should discontinue use and return the product to the customer service desk at any Meijer store for a full refund,” states the FDA alert.

If you’ve consumed these products and have a cashew allergy, watch for symptoms like hives, swelling of the lips or tongue, difficulty breathing, or digestive problems. Seek medical attention immediately if you experience any reaction symptoms.
For questions about the recall, customers can contact Meijer at 800-543-3704 from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. ET daily.
Food recalls for undeclared allergens remain a common safety issue. The FDA recognizes nine major food allergens that must be clearly labeled: eggs, milk, fish, wheat, soybeans, crustacean shellfish, sesame, tree nuts, and peanuts. Tree nuts include both almonds and cashews.

Millions of Americans live with food allergies, making proper labeling crucial for public safety. Even trace amounts of an allergen can trigger severe reactions in sensitive individuals.

The FDA continues to monitor the situation and urges consumers with the affected products to return them to Meijer for a refund, regardless of whether they have a receipt.
