The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued an urgent warning for UK consumers to stop buying and eating several Jolly Rancher sweet products that contain chemicals linked to DNA damage and increased cancer risk.
Four specific products have been identified in the recall: Jolly Rancher Hard Candy, Jolly Rancher ‘Misfits’ Gummies, Jolly Rancher Hard Candy Fruity 2 in 1, and Jolly Rancher Berry Gummies. All pack sizes, batch codes, and best-before dates are affected.
The sweets contain Mineral Oil Aromatic Hydrocarbons (MOAH) and Mineral Oil Saturated Hydrocarbons (MOSH), substances used in confectionery to prevent stickiness and create a glossy appearance. These compounds do not comply with UK food safety laws.
“MOAH can cause damage to DNA and has the potential to increase the risk of cancer, particularly if consumed in high quantities over a prolonged period of time,” the FSA stated. The agency classified MOAH as a “genotoxic carcinogen,” meaning no exposure is without risk.
The health concern is especially significant for younger consumers and those who eat these sweets regularly. While MOAH poses the primary risk, MOSH can accumulate in the body’s tissues over time.

For consumers who have already eaten these products, the FSA advises there is “no immediate cause for concern, as food safety risk is low,” but stresses they should not eat any more. Anyone with these sweets at home should dispose of them immediately.
The Hershey Company, which owns Jolly Rancher, has been working with the FSA since 2024 to remove these products from the UK market and has ceased official supply. However, some UK businesses continue to import and sell them.
The FSA has instructed retailers to immediately stop selling these products and perform recalls where necessary. Enforcement authorities have been asked to ensure the sweets are removed from shelves.
