The United States staged a diplomatic walkout from a UN Security Council meeting on July 28, protesting French remarks that compared America to North Korea and Russia regarding human rights positions, escalating tensions between the longtime allies.
The conflict began when the US voted alongside North Korea and Russia against extending Volker Turk’s term as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Following that vote, France’s UN mission issued a statement criticizing the US decision, stating that “The US used to be a beacon of human rights. Not anymore,” in an implicit comparison to authoritarian regimes.
Dan Negrea, an alternate representative to the General Assembly and senior US delegation official, responded angrily to the French criticism, dismissing their remarks as “disingenuous grandstanding” and objecting to being grouped with authoritarian nations on human rights matters.
When France’s ambassador took the floor at a subsequent Security Council meeting to discuss Ukraine, US representatives walked out of the session entirely, signaling formal diplomatic protest to the French government’s criticism. The walkout reflects broader tensions between the Trump administration and France regarding European security strategy and American commitments to NATO.
Disagreements over US troop deployments in Europe and Trump administration initiatives toward Greenland have further strained relations between Washington and Paris.
