The UK is moving into a cooler, more unsettled period this week. Temperatures are falling back toward seasonal averages after a warmer spell, while northern and western parts of England, Scotland, and Wales can expect rain and stronger winds.

The Met Office has indicated that north-westerly winds will bring showers and periods of more sustained rain to northern and western areas. Southern and eastern parts of England are likely to see drier conditions, though not entirely settled.

What to expect this week

  • Temperatures will feel noticeably lower than recent days
  • Northern and western areas face the highest chance of rain
  • North-westerly winds will strengthen across parts of the UK
  • Southern and eastern England should see relatively drier conditions
  • Conditions are closer to what would typically be expected for mid-September

The shift is not unusual for this time of year. September historically marks the transition from summer patterns to more autumnal conditions, with temperatures and weather systems becoming less settled.

Pack a waterproof if you are in northern or western areas this week. The cooler temperatures also mean a jacket will be useful in the evenings, even if the daytime starts bright.

The Met Office provides updated regional forecasts at the BBC Weather and Met Office websites. Check those for specific conditions in your area as the week progresses.
