fireworks-display/” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>Truro City Council has cancelled its 2026 Bonfire Night and Fireworks Display, scheduled for November 5. It is the second year in a row the event has not gone ahead in Cornwall’s county city.

The council said in its September 22 announcement that it could not deliver the event safely within available budgets and resources while keeping it affordable for the public and meeting requirements tied to its classification as an “Enhanced tier” event under Martyn’s Law.

Martyn’s Law is UK legislation named after Martyn Hett, who died in the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing. The law sets out protective security requirements for public venues and events. Martyn’s Law has received Royal Assent but its substantive requirements are not yet in force. The government expects the law to come into force in spring 2027 and is encouraging organisations to prepare in advance. An Enhanced tier designation applies to events expected to attract larger crowds and carries more extensive planning and security requirements than the standard tier.

Truro’s 2025 statement on that year’s cancellation said the council was exploring alternatives for 2026. The 2026 announcement confirms those alternatives did not produce a viable event. The council said it examined potential venues, pedestrian and traffic access, and impacts on nearby residents before concluding the event could not proceed. It has not announced plans for an alternative community event this November.

Truro residents looking for Bonfire Night events in the region should check Cornwall Council’s community events listings for alternatives in surrounding towns. No replacement date or format has been announced by Truro City Council. For our coverage of how Martyn’s Law is affecting UK community events, see our Martyn’s Law explainer.
