Pope Leo XIV celebrated Mass at Place de la Concorde in Paris before an estimated 800,000 people on Saturday, the largest papal gathering in France since John Paul II’s 1980 visit. The event marked Leo’s first major international appearance since his election in May 2026, and the sheer crowd size signaled strong European enthusiasm for the first American-born pope.

The Mass featured music from five continents and readings in seven languages, reflecting Leo’s stated priority of making the Church more globally representative. Leo addressed the crowd in French, Italian, and English, warning that unchecked artificial intelligence could erode human dignity if left unregulated.

Pope Leo XIV’s AI warning at the Mass drew particular attention from technology policy circles. The pontiff called for a “moral framework” for AI development, arguing that machines must serve humanity rather than replace human judgment. The Vatican’s statement on AI ethics, released alongside the Mass, outlined specific principles including transparency, human oversight, and the prohibition of autonomous weapons systems.

Security arrangements were the tightest ever for a Paris public event, with over 20,000 police officers deployed and drones monitoring the crowd from above. Authorities reported no major incidents, though 47 people received medical attention for heat exhaustion in temperatures reaching 32°C. The French Interior Ministry praised the operation as “flawless.”

The 800,000 attendance figure, provided by Paris police sources, would make this the largest religious gathering in France since the 1997 World Youth Day. Place de la Concorde was transformed with a temporary altar, seating for 40,000, and a massive screen for those standing at the periphery.

Pope Leo XIV’s earlier Paris Mass in 2025 had drawn 200,000, meaning this year’s attendance more than quadrupled. Church officials attributed the surge to Leo’s American background and his focus on youth engagement, though some analysts pointed to the Vatican’s improved public relations strategy.

The Mass concluded with Leo blessing the crowd from the Apostolic Palace balcony replica constructed at the site. pilgrims began dispersing by 8 PM local time, though many remained to sing hymns. The French government confirmed the event cost approximately €8 million, funded jointly by the Vatican and the City of Paris.
