There’s a good chance the affected cartons are already sitting in someone’s pantry. Horizon Organic has voluntarily recalled 53,760 cases of its 8-ounce shelf-stable 1% Chocolate Milk after complaints about packaging that appeared bloated and contents that could be subject to premature spoilage.
The recalled products come in two configurations: a 12-count pack with UPC 742365002700 and an 18-count pack with UPC 742365208867. Combined, that’s between 640,000 and 760,000+ individual cartons depending on case configuration.
The affected best-by dates are:
12-count packs: January 28, 30, 31, February 1, 2, and 3, 2027
18-count packs: January 31, February 1, and 2, 2027
Here’s why this matters more than a typical “check the date” recall. These are shelf-stable cartons — the kind designed to sit in a pantry for months without refrigeration. Horizon says affected packages may appear bloated and the contents may develop an unpleasant taste, odor or texture because of possible premature spoilage.
The recall notice identifies a packaging and premature-spoilage concern rather than an allergen or pathogen as the reason for the recall. Horizon says a root-cause investigation is underway and corrective steps will be taken.
