Elon Musk, the celebrated entrepreneur and CEO of Tesla, recently announced the launch of a new artificial intelligence (AI) project, XAI. Enigmatically purposed “to understand the true nature of the universe”, XAI is the latest addition to Musk’s portfolio of revolutionary businesses.

Although details about the project remain sparse, Musk confirmed his involvement with XAI via a change to his Twitter profile’s bio. This development comes on the heels of Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, highlighting his expanding influence in the technology sphere.

A diverse team of 12 individuals is listed on the recently launched XAI website, all of whom have backgrounds in esteemed AI organizations such as OpenAI, DeepMind, Google Research, Microsoft Research, and Tesla. Musk himself is included in this lineup.

Adding to the anticipation, a Twitter Space Q&A session with XAI team members is scheduled for Friday, July 14, inviting the public to engage with the new project.

Interestingly, this move into AI comes despite Musk’s previous criticisms of AI technologies. Musk notably decried OpenAI’s popular chatbot, ChatGPT, for being overly “politically correct”, sparking questions about the potential direction of XAI.

The Financial Times previously reported that Musk had procured thousands of Nvidia GPU processors, suggesting an intensive data training phase for the AI venture. One of the team members, a former senior AI researcher at Google’s DeepMind, was known to have been approached by Musk earlier this year for collaboration.

The startup, co-founded by Greg Yang, intends to explore the “mathematics of deep learning” to create a ‘Theory of Everything’ for large networks, marking what could be the next evolution in AI. XAI was officially incorporated in Nevada by Musk in March, further solidifying the company’s presence in the AI landscape.

In alignment with its ambitious mission, XAI is also set to collaborate closely with other firms in Musk’s extensive portfolio. This close collaboration could lead to an innovative cross-pollination approach, leveraging synergies across Musk’s various ventures.

Dan Hendryks, executive director of the Center for AI Safety, is expected to advise XAI. This appointment highlights the growing mainstream conversation around AI safety.

The creation of XAI has ignited excitement among Tesla’s shareholders and the wider tech industry. Given the team members’ experience with projects like DeepMind’s Alphacode and OpenAI’s GPT chatbot, the new venture could significantly impact the AI industry.

The new venture could explore large language models similar to OpenAI’s GPT-4 or delve into reinforcement learning techniques. By striving to enhance our understanding of fields as varied as cosmology, physics, and computer science, XAI holds the potential to redefine our perception of the universe.

With Musk at the helm, XAI could challenge established norms in AI development. His criticisms of existing AI technologies indicate a potential shift in trajectory, possibly focusing on more ‘objective’ or ‘unbiased’ AI models.

This venture could have considerable influence on the development direction of AI in Musk-led companies like Tesla, potentially signaling a more integrated approach to AI. All eyes will now be on XAI as it sets out to revolutionize AI, armed with an ambitious goal and an experienced team.
