A major structural fire destroyed the historic beachfront restaurant Chez Gado Gado on Jalan Camplung Tanduk in Seminyak, Bali, on August 30 at approximately 7:30 to 7:40 p.m. West Indonesian Time. The restaurant had been a well-known dining destination for several decades. The Badung Fire and Rescue Department deployed approximately 10 fire engines to combat the blaze, using roughly 115,000 liters of water over two hours and 40 minutes of active firefighting operations.
No deaths were reported. No injuries were immediately documented.
Estimated property loss is approximately Rp4 billion.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Denpasar Police stated that officers suspect the fire started after a helium balloon came into contact with a lit candle inside the restaurant, but this determination is preliminary.
Chez Gado Gado held significance in Bali’s tourism sector as a longstanding restaurant and gathering space. Its destruction eliminates a multi-generational hospitality venue known to many visitors and residents.
The restaurant was constructed with materials common in Bali’s coastal hospitality venues. Local fire response demonstrated coordination between emergency services, with the Badung Fire and Rescue Department containing the fire to the property and preventing spread to adjacent structures.
For Seminyak’s tourism operations, the loss of a recognizable destination affects visitor planning. Tour operators and travel recommendations often reference decades-old establishments as anchors for neighborhood familiarity.
