A fungus so resistant to drugs that it threatens patients in hospitals nationwide has now been detected in 27 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Candida auris colonizes skin and mucous membranes, spreading silently without causing immediate illness—yet it can turn deadly for the most vulnerable.

The CDC documented 6,304 clinical cases of Candida auris in 2024, with numbers rising year after year. Called an “urgent antimicrobial resistance threat,” this fungus is multidrug-resistant and thrives in healthcare facilities where patients are most vulnerable. Infections can affect the bloodstream, wounds, and ears; approximately one in three patients with invasive infection die, though isolating the fungus’s exact role in already-critical patients remains difficult.

Why It Spreads

Candida auris has an unsettling advantage: it colonizes human skin and mucous membranes without causing any sign of illness. People can carry it and shed it to others—especially in busy hospitals with frequent patient contact and shared equipment. Once established in a facility, screening colonized patients, rigorous hand hygiene among staff, and thorough cleaning of surfaces become essential to slow transmission.

Treatment Challenges

The antifungal echinocandin is the preferred treatment, though data on its effectiveness remain limited. Some strains have already shown resistance to at least one antifungal, according to reporting by ABC on August 5, 2026.

Who Faces the Greatest Risk

Hospital patients in intensive care units face the highest risk, especially those with central lines or other medical devices, those who received broad-spectrum antibiotics recently, and those with weakened immune systems.

What Healthcare Facilities Are Doing

Beyond screening and cleaning, infection control and emergency response measures focus on preventing spread before illness develops—catching the colonized but asymptomatic carriers before they transmit the fungus to higher-risk patients.
