Coles has issued an urgent nationwide recall of two popular peanut butter products after detecting potential aflatoxin contamination. The affected items are Coles Smooth Peanut Butter 1kg and Coles Crunchy Peanut Butter 1kg, both priced at $6.50.

The recalled products were sold in Coles supermarkets and online between May 1 and June 30, 2025. Only jars with a Best Before date of February 5, 2027 are affected.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has warned consumers not to eat these products due to the health risks associated with aflatoxins. These naturally occurring toxins are produced by certain molds that grow on crops like peanuts, corn, and cottonseed, particularly in warm and humid conditions.

Health experts link aflatoxin exposure to serious conditions including liver damage and an increased risk of liver cancer with long-term consumption. Short-term exposure can cause symptoms including nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
