The Australian government is offering 600 interstate travellers $500 each to visit the Red Centre — but it’s not a travel payment. It’s an accommodation voucher.
Applications opened on September 5, 2026, and close September 30. The total pool is $300,000 — 600 vouchers at $500 each — handed out on a first-come, first-served basis. Once 600 eligible applications are verified, Round 1’s 600 vouchers will have been allocated.
Who can actually apply?
You need to be an Australian resident living outside the Northern Territory. NT residents are excluded from Round 1. Applicants must hold a current Australian driver’s licence showing an address outside the NT. TCA says it may request a copy of the licence before issuing the voucher. You also need to be 18 or older.
What does $500 actually buy you?
The voucher covers accommodation only — at participating caravan parks, campgrounds, wayside inns, and roadhouses across the Red Centre and Barkly region. The voucher is for eligible accommodation; it is not a general travel-expense payment. If your accommodation booking costs less than $500, the leftover balance is forfeited — there’s no change or cash-back.
Bookings must go through Tourism Central Australia’s official booking system or one of its Visitor Information Centres. You can’t use it at just any accommodation you find online.
When do you need to travel?
Successful applicants will be notified on October 5, 2026. Bookings must be locked in by January 20, 2027. Travel must be completed by June 30, 2027.
The bigger funding picture
This voucher campaign sits inside a $5 million Red Centre Marketing Boost, which itself is part of an 8.5 million Red Centre investment package from the Australian government. The rest of that money includes a $1 million Alice Springs Revival and Resilience grant program and a $2.5 million Red Centre Tourism Development Fund.
For anyone already planning a road trip through Central Australia, the voucher reduces accommodation costs by up to $500. For anyone who wasn’t planning the trip, $500 off a caravan park doesn’t automatically make it cheap — the cost of getting there from the eastern seaboard still falls entirely on you.
