French Aircraft Spotted the Drones an Hour Before They Sank the Contship Jet — Why Bulgaria Was Legally Powerless to Intercept

Commercial freighters moving through western Black Sea corridors now traverse zones where remote-controlled naval drones alter maritime risk daily. The sinking of the 19,960-ton Contship Jet inside a NATO member exclusive economic zone proves that routine merchant shipping lanes are no longer shielded from naval conflict. Newly released video footage shows three sea drones striking and sinking a commercial container vessel off Bulgaria’s Black Sea coastline. All 18 crew members were rescued, but the attack has set off immediate alarms for commercial shipping insurers, trade analysts, and NATO naval planners.

The Greek-managed, Liberian-flagged container ship Contship Jet was struck near the Bulgarian coast on October 28, 2026. The ship was carrying 421 containers on a route from Haifa, Israel, to Constanța, Romania. Three remote-controlled explosive sea drones struck the 19,960-ton freighter, which sank after the impacts. Bulgarian border police confirmed all 18 crew members were rescued — 14 Filipino nationals and four Ukrainians. Bulgaria’s Military District Prosecutor’s Office has opened a formal investigation. No state has been formally named as responsible for the attack as of publication. Initial surveys by Bulgarian environmental teams found no visible signs of pollution, though the vessel carried hazardous cargo including lithium-ion batteries, corrosive liquids, and acids.

The sinking of a commercial vessel in Bulgaria’s maritime zone is expected to put upward pressure on marine insurance rates for Black Sea transit routes. With commercial shipping lanes exposed to uncrewed naval drone attacks, merchant carriers face the prospect of higher war-risk premiums or forced rerouting, adding cost pressure to grain and container freight passing between the Mediterranean, Romania, and Central European ports.

The attack took place within Bulgaria’s Exclusive Economic Zone — a maritime area extending 200 nautical miles from the coast where Bulgaria holds resource rights and certain jurisdictional authority but not full territorial sovereignty. It was described as the fifth merchant vessel struck in the Black Sea region in 22 days. A French Atlantique 2 patrol aircraft spotted the three sea drones approaching and warned the Bulgarian Navy‘s operations center before the attack. Bulgarian authorities said they could not legally intercept the drones while they remained outside the country’s territorial waters. The footage, verified by Euronews, shows precision strikes against the vessel’s hull.

Bulgaria’s Military District Prosecutor confirmed the investigation is active. Regional reporting has noted Bulgarian and Russian tensions as context, but military authorities have not formally assigned state responsibility. Previous Black Sea grain corridor security reports and maritime defense technology coverage have tracked the growing drone activity in this region.

Diplomatic responses are being coordinated in Sofia and Brussels. NATO member states are weighing enhanced maritime air policing patrols across the western Black Sea. The Bulgarian investigation is ongoing. Follow developments here as diplomatic and legal responses emerge.
