A fire ignited inside the training area at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, Alberta, at approximately 4 p.m. local time on 17 October, according to a release from Canada’s Department of National Defence. The fire spread rapidly beyond the boundaries of the training area, prompting a combined response from military personnel and civilian emergency services.

The Canadian Armed Forces confirmed that the fire resulted in both fatalities and injuries among those affected. The department has not released specific numbers for either fatalities or injuries. Officials said the full extent of the fire’s impact is still being assessed, and the assessment work is continuing.

Notification of next of kin is currently under way, the Canadian Armed Forces said. Officials said that casualty and injury details will not be confirmed publicly until that notification process has been completed in full. The department described supporting affected people and carrying out next-of-kin notification as its immediate priorities.

In practical terms, this means families connected to the base, and the loved ones of those affected, face a period before they receive official confirmation of who was hurt or killed. Public details on individual casualties will not be released until next-of-kin notification is complete. The Canadian Armed Forces said that assessment is continuing separately from the notification process.

The Canadian Armed Forces said it continues to work with emergency services, local authorities and other partners as part of the response to the fire. That coordination involves both military and civilian agencies responding to the incident in the Wainwright area.

Defence Minister David J. McGuinty said federal, Alberta and municipal governments are mobilising support for those affected by the fire. He thanked the first responders who took part in the response effort.

General Jennie Carignan said the immediate focus is on the people affected by the fire and the response efforts under way, and said that focus also extends to the welfare of Canadian Armed Forces members, their families, and the surrounding community.

National Defence said it is working with emergency services, local authorities and other partners while the assessment and next-of-kin notification continue. The department said further information would be released as it becomes available.

Lieutenant-General Michael Wright, Commander of the Canadian Army, said soldiers, civilian personnel and emergency responders were working with local authorities. He said the army would continue to assist those affected by the incident.
