Instagram Limits Reach of AI-Generated Profiles Without Labels Starting August 31, 2026

Instagram is implementing new enforcement rules for accounts that present synthetic or computer-generated people. Starting August 31, 2026, Instagram began limiting the reach of some profiles featuring AI-generated people when they are not appropriately labelled.

The enforcement mechanism targets algorithmic recommendations. Accounts detected as showing AI-generated people without proper disclosure may see limits to their profile’s reach, which reduces visibility in recommendation surfaces. The policy distinguishes between human creators using AI assistance and accounts whose apparent human persona itself is artificially generated.

Instagram explained the reasoning behind this shift. User feedback indicated that people objected to discovering that a profile appearing to represent a real person was actually artificial. The change fits within Meta’s longer AI-transparency system across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.
