A packaging mix-up on a popular soup product has triggered a public health alert from food safety officials. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) warns consumers about Signature SELECT chicken soup products with incorrect labeling that fails to mention wheat, a common allergen.

The affected product shows “Signature SELECT Creamy Chicken & Wild Rice SOUP with White Meat Chicken” on the lid but displays “Signature SELECT Chicken Corn CHOWDER with White Meat Chicken Smoke Flavor Added” on the side label. This error means wheat in the soup isn’t listed on the side label, creating a serious risk for people with wheat allergies or celiac disease.

The soup in question comes in 24-ounce plastic cups with a “BEST BY June 24 25” date and lot code “8225 5100” printed on the cup’s bottom. These products bear the establishment number “P-46381” inside the USDA inspection mark.

All affected soups were made on April 10, 2025, and shipped to stores in three states – Texas, Utah, and Washington.

The mislabeling problem came to light when a store employee noticed the label discrepancy and reported it. The retailer then alerted Albertsons, the company behind the Signature SELECT brand, which passed the information to food safety officials.

While no formal recall has been issued, the FSIS still released a public health alert because some consumers might still have these products at home, even though they’re no longer being sold in stores.

FSIS is issuing this public health alert to ensure that consumers with allergies to wheat are aware that these products should not be consumed.

The FSIS reports no confirmed cases of allergic reactions from these products so far. However, food safety officials urge anyone concerned about possible symptoms to contact their doctor.

Undeclared allergens remain one of the top reasons for food recalls nationwide. Wheat is among the “Big Nine” major food allergens that must be clearly labeled on food packaging under federal law. The others include milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, soy, and sesame.

Consumers who purchased these soups should not eat them. The FSIS recommends either throwing them away or returning them to the store for a refund.

For questions about this public health alert, consumers can contact Jessica Keener, Communications Manager at Albertsons, at [email protected]. The USDA also operates a toll-free Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-674-6854 for food safety concerns.

This situation highlights the importance of careful food labeling and the serious consequences that can result from packaging errors. For people with food allergies, clear and accurate ingredient lists aren’t just helpful information – they’re essential protection against potentially dangerous allergic reactions.
