Washington D.C.’s public transit system just got easier to navigate. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority launched MetroPulse, a mobile app that puts live transit updates and customer service right in riders’ pockets.
The app, now available on iPhone with Android coming soon, helps riders track buses and trains in real-time, plan trips, and chat directly with Metro staff. It’s the mobile version of WMATA’s web platform that started last June.
“We are striving to take the guesswork out of transit,” said Metro General Manager Randy Clarke. “MetroPulse puts the real-time information customers need right in their pockets in a native app that is easy to use and navigate.”
What’s Different About MetroPulse?
The app’s standout feature is its live chat with customer service. Riders can send photos and videos directly to Metro staff to report issues, including safety concerns. This direct line of communication aims to speed up problem-solving on the transit system.
MetroPulse shows exactly where buses and trains are on the network. Riders can check arrival times, plan routes combining bus and rail, and find the nearest stops. The app also displays how well the system is running through performance data for both buses and trains.

Early User Experience
While many riders welcome an official WMATA app, early feedback shows room for improvement. Some users note the app’s interface could be more user-friendly compared to existing third-party apps like MetroHero and Transit. The speed and accuracy of location services have also drawn attention from early adopters.
The app currently works separately from WMATA’s SmarTrip payment system, which handles fare collection through its own app. This means riders still need two apps to manage their full transit experience.
Looking Forward
WMATA plans to refine the app based on user feedback. The app will continue to improve over time with future updates planned.

Beyond the app itself, this launch represents WMATA’s push to modernize DC’s transit experience. By putting live system information in riders’ hands, MetroPulse aims to make public transportation a more reliable option for getting around the nation’s capital.
For immediate help, riders can still call 202-GO-METRO (TTY 202-962-2033). The phone system now offers a callback option during busy times instead of keeping callers on hold. Real-time updates are also available through Metro’s social media accounts on X and Bluesky
